Saving.....

The Money Revolution principles inform our saving.  From how much we choose to save, and where we choose to save or invest it, principles of stewardship impact our decisions. This page offers some areas that you might not have thought about......

Credit Unions

Credit Unions are financial co-operatives which are owned and controlled by their members.  Money invested with a credit union can be loaned to other members at reduced rates, helping local people combat personal debt. To find out more, contact the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd (tel: 0161 832 3694).

Kingdom Bank

Kingdom Bank is a UK-based independent Christian bank with a 50-year heritage, offering savings accounts to individuals as well as churches, charities, businesses, and trusts. The Company is ethical by nature, and dedicates its entire mortgage and lending capacity to provide funds to build and develop churches and Christian ministries within the UK.  Click here to find out more.

Ethical Investment

In recent years there has been a very significant growth in the number of unit and investment trusts, funds and pension funds offered with an "ethical" label. Each of these will have an ethical policy, which may involve negative screening (avoiding companies which trade in certain markets and sectors) or positive selection (favouring companies which promote certain policies and products.)  Each individual investor who wishes to invest ethically will need to take two steps. Firstly to determine what ethical policy they wish to follow, and secondly, selecting investments which they believe will perform well. On this latter point, taking appropriate financial advice is recommended.

In determining your ethical policy, you may find it helpful to explore some of the resources of the Church of England’s Ethical Investment Advisory Group. Since 1994 they have advised the Church of England on issues of ethical investment policy.  It aims to offer practical advice in a theological context and seeks to promote high standards of corporate behaviour and the principles of integrity, accountability and transparency in corporate life.  Individuals can access their policies, annual reports and other documents which may be helpful in developing their own. Why I save with a Credit Union......

Bishop John Packer, Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, explains why he has a savings account with the Leeds Credit Union :  "Credit unions are among the unsung heroes of this generation in helping to deal with the problem of debt. They enable people to save and borrow without the restrictions of many banks, or the horrifying rates of money-lenders. The more of us save with them, the more they can help those in real need."
